The beautiful weather we've been enjoying likely contributed to the impressive turnout of over 200 music-lovers, amongst which at least one —me— had never had occasion to listen to Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo, whose pensive ballads —nearly minuets— «Madison» and «The Hudson» stood out for their lyrical beauty; these pieces found good company in a stirring interpretation of the third part of Chopin's emotive «Sonata in G minor» and the first three movements of Brahms' «Sonata n.1 in E minor».
To Ms. Xingtong flawless accompaniment, Ms. Tucker's cello, one of the 800 instruments owned by the Benslow Music Trust, had a peculiar protagonism: its low timbre and subdued highs gave it a masculine quality that endowed its music in a rather unique aura; I'm glad we were all able to experience it.
These midweek concerts that Christ Church so carefully curates will resume on April 10 with a harp duet in the hands of the Chroma Harp Duo.
