Clarinettist Andrew Roberts brought Mozart’s «Clarinet Quintet» (K581) to Christ Church with the help of the promising Azure String Quartet, which features not one but two of Mr. Roberts’ daughters. What a talented family— mine can barely clap in unison to keep a beat.
The «Clarinet Quintet» was played in its entirety to an audience of more than 200; there was barely enough time for an extra piece, but, fortunately, Joseph Küffner’ own «Clarinet Quintet» (Op. 32) was squeezed in. It shares a lot of the virtues of Mozart’s: it is elegant and whimsical, but more subtle and agile: I thoroughly enjoyed it.
We’re very fortunate to be able to have complete pieces like today’s Mozart’s. While there is nothing wrong with the usual duos or trios that play a wider selection of singles, the opportunity to appreciate the fuller orchestration of a string quartet masterfully lead by the clarinet will always seem like such a special treat, and true testament of the musical depth that can be appreciated at Christ Church.
