Blair/Martens Duo at Christ Church

Gillian Blair and Nathan Martens’ saxophones, accompanied by Lauryna Sableviciute’s piano, drew an audience of nearly 150 music lovers to Christ Church earlier today, as part of this institution’s Midweek Music programme.

We last heard Ms Blair as part of the Polaris Duo back in March of last year, though today’s presentation had less of a classical feel. A few highlights were the «Chōjū-Jinbutsu-Giga» by Nobuhito Sato, whose mellow, pensive ligatures transported what otherwise are modern instruments to pre-feudalistic Japan (or to the soundtrack of SimCity 3000).

«Aquarelle» by Bournemouthian Andy Scott was the final piece performed, and of its four movements I particularly enjoyed the third, entitled «Film», which was very melodic and evocative.

This concert had such a contemporary take that the “oldest” piece played was by Romantic Clara Schumann, herself an innovator of piano performances. Here shone Ms Sableviciute, whose performance perfectly matched the lively virtuosity of this versatile saxophone duo.
